Intracortical vs. thalamocortical processing of spatial working memory
نویسندگان
چکیده
Working memory processes contain not only maintenance but manipulation of the working memory contents. The system of the mediodorsal (MD) nucleus and the prefrontal cortex is considered to contribute to some aspects of the working memory processes. This article studies computationally the characteristics of the integrated cortical and thalamocortical system. The model circuit is operated in the “thalamocortical mode”, in which the thalamocortical inputs can control the cortical working memory representation. Our simulation shows that transient excitatory inputs to the MD relay cells can erase the working memory representation through the intracortical processes, especially the cross-directional inhibition. c © 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. The effect of verbal and visuospatial working memory spans on collocation processing in learners of English
Much interest has recently been directed toward the knowledge of collocations in the field of second language learning since they have been asserted to improve fluency. The current study was intended to examine the effect of verbal and visuospatial working memory spans on the processing of collocations using a Self-Pace Reading Task (SPRT) and relevant working memory tasks. To this end, partici...

متن کاملWorking Memory Training in Children with Mild Intellectual Disability, Through Designed Computerized Program
Objectives: The aim of this research is designing a computerized program, in game format, for working memory training in mild intellectual disabled children. Methods: 24 students participated as test and control groups. The auditory and visual-spatial WM were assessed by primary test, which included computerized Wechsler numerical forward and backward sub- tests, and secondary tests, which c...
متن کاملThe state of somatosensory cortex during neuromodulation.
During behavioral quiescence, such as slow-wave sleep and anesthesia, the neocortex is in a deactivated state characterized by the presence of slow oscillations. During arousal, slow oscillations are absent and the neocortex is in an activated state that greatly impacts information processing. Neuromodulators acting in neocortex are believed to mediate these state changes, but the mechanisms ar...
